Sneak Peak...of a Pipe Dream

I'm working hard behind the scenes at the moment on a new look eyedeers website, blog and all sorts of digi things but I've also been getting to grips with screen printing again!

It's just been great creating a mess to be honest(I'm sure anybody who works in front of a computer all day can empathise!) and experimenting with some new eyedeers but anyway here is a sneak peak at one of my early prints, Live the Pipe Dream.

I stumbled across this large format pic and being a lover of this style of cityscape photography I immediately questioned who it belonged to??? Eventually I found the answer; Shinatro Sato and there are even more of his gems at http://shinsato.cool.ne.jp/twilight%20s%20english.htm!

The beauty of this composition lies in the unexpected consistency created by the snow painted white rooftops. Natures intervention sits both perfectly juxtaposed against the harsh night sky and paradoxically at odds with the expected random concrete and glass palette. Shinatro is definitely a photographer to keep an eye on!

I've been meaning to post for ages all this schizzle on my laptop, so here's a few random bits. I've got another couple of posts that are way overdue too but these will get rid of some clutter for now lol. No particular connection bar the fact that they caught my eye. I do love the quote below of John Cage and I keep thinking about how commercially true it can be.

UNICEF & A clever use of Toy soldiers...

Toy soldiers have been used in so many different guises but it is something about their fragility, scale and the process of reversing their purpose that makes this eyedeer more effective. The toys suggest a direct association with how children become pawns of war. The rows of mass produced figures also replicates the scale of the problem that UNICEF face.

I'm about to read the copy on the image as I publish this, I'm sure that it is much more interesting than my ramblings! Note to self...I should also stop writing on my blog like someone actually reads it lolol

Concatenating two symbols... just simply two images in one

I never really thought about how concatenation actually applies to design before?!

noun

A brilliant use of the Newspaper format

This is a perfect example of spotting a potential disadvantage in a format, in this case the loose binding of a newspaper, marrying it with an eyedeer and fully demonstrating its potential.

Negative space

Classic Fedex style arrow reminded me to try experimenting with negative spaces when doing logo design. Although sometimes I wonder if this approach is a little too visually unclear. When you ask how many people have actually looked close enough at the Fedex logo to see its hidden gem, I'm always surprised by the answer! I suppose the important point is that wit can often be best used in addition to the central element as opposed the core device.

This piece has been created by McCann Erickson Düsseldorf, Germany. I wonder whether the post production on the bicep could have been done a little more subtly but the stitches link to the copy and eyedeer perfectly.

This Heineken ad would be so much better if it was actually feasible and observational but an original approach to a festival poster

Social awareness pieces

I've got a couple ideas for some recycling posters that I want to produce so I've been looking at some cause related pieces. These adverts by Felix Hornung for a homeless charity depicting animals without their shells show that nature is often a great source of inspiration. The campaign was apparently a storming success and the magazine similar to the Big Issue increased it sales massively overnight.

This is simply a fantastic use of typography to depict on going problems in Tibet..
Below are warzone images by McCann Erickson using human wounds as their canvas. The stitches are a harrowing comparison to trench lines.

I saw this work for Amnesty International at the D&AD exhibition in Urbis Manchester. It's a great example of how thinking about the medium itself can produce fantastic results. Other work there that caught my eye was the Penguin book jackets based on soundwaves and a collection of marmite ads using the product to create illustrations.

I feel like I've gathered a mass of brilliant ideas that I want to start uploading and gathering into one location. I feel like this blog is hopefully going to become something I turn to before starting any creative project, we'll see. Anyway I best upload something by the legend that is Bob Gill, it only seems right on a blog about ideas. I can't speak highly enough about his book Design is a Second language, it is just a must.

This speaks a lot about Bobs approach that no matter what everything in the world is linked and can be defined in one image. His approach of re-writing the brief is critical but ultimately super effective.

I think every designer should have a place to dump their thoughts, scribble a list or ramble about things on a daily basis. That is exactly what I want to try and use this blog for and hopefully somewhere along the way someone might find it of some interest or inspiration for themself... who knows :-)

I don't really know the best place to start is, so I suppose I'll upload the image that for me really defines my study at Uni. That's where life gets really interesting after all!

I was put on the spot by my tutor to show him something that I aspire to and this John West Advert by Leo Burnet Ltd London was the first and only thing that came into my head. To me it is the perfect balance between the familiar and play. Perfect observation executed in a manor that is so simple it says everything it needs to. After all the biggest ideas are often the simplest.
